Who is Erica Meg Parkinson?
Going into the summer break, the North Carolina Courage only had three midfielders under contract for 2027. While all three (Riley Jackson, Shinomi Koyama, and Carly Wickenheiser) can play at a good level, depth could certainly be a concern.
Now they have moved to address that depth. First reported on by Conner Roberts and Flo Lloyd-Hughes at the Cutback, the Courage have signed English midfielder Erica Meg Parkinson on a free transfer.
Fun facts #
- Her father was a huge Manchester United fan, and named her after Eric Cantona
- She has used both ‘Parkinson’ (in the English fashion) and ‘Erica Meg’ (in the Portuguese fashion) on her jersey
- One of the four languages she speaks is Japanese, which could definitely come in handy on the Courage
Club career #
Parkinson is an 18-year old who just finished her third season in the Portuguese first division. In the 2024-25 season, her first full year as a member of the Valadares Gaia first team, she was named the young player of the year. She finished with three goals in the team’s 22 games, as they finished fifth in the table. In 2025-26, she played nearly every minute of all 18 matches for the team, finishing with five goals and one assist as Valadares finished fourth.
Her production wasn’t inflated by finishing; she finished with 5.1 xG and 1.4 xA on the season, per Sofascore. What it was somewhat inflated by is penalties - she was 3 for 3 from the spot, accounting for a little under half of her expected goals.
Is the Portuguese first division good? Eh. Benfica has won the league six years in a row, but has only gotten past the league or group stage of the UEFA Champions League once (They lost 6-1 on aggregate to Lyon in the quarterfinals in 2024). If you look at the UEFA coefficients, it’s ranked sixth among European leagues the past two years, sandwiched between Italy and Sweden. But the Courage have brought players from Sweden directly into the fold (Shinomi Koyama, Carly Wickenheiser), and Parkinson has nearly two full years of professional experience before her 18th birthday. Recent Courage youth signings (Riley Jackson, Lauryn Thompson, Sydney Schmidt) have come in with minimal or no pro experience.
International career #
Parkinson was born in Singapore to an English father and a Japanese mother. The family moved to Portugal when she was ten, making her eligible for all of Japan, Signapore, Portugal and England. She chose to play for the England national team, saying later it was because they were the first country that asked. At the 2024 U-17 World Cup she joined current Courage player Lauryn Thompson on the roster, starting every game and scoring one goal. Through 2025 and early 2026 she then progressed to the U-19 and U-23 teams. In April 2026 she was called up to the senior England team for World Cup qualifiers, but did not play.
At the time of her senior callup, England head coach Sarina Wiegman described her thusly.
She’s a very dynamic attacking midfielder who wants to go forward and is also very aggressive and pretty technical. I'm aware that the step from the Portuguese league and the under-23s to the England seniors is a big step, but at the same time I want to see her and give her that opportunity.
Most recently, she captained the England U-20 squad in a friendly against Canada.
What she brings to the Courage #
Erica Parkinson is a right-footed midfielder, who plays in a band of three in Valadares Gaia’s 4-1-3-2 and 5-3-2 systems. She usually lines up either in the center or on the right.
There is a disturbingly dedicated YouTube channel curating Erica Parkinson highlights, so let’s hit up the compilation videos to see what she can do.
When Riley Jackson came into the team, we saw her calmness, compusure, and her most notable trait - her passing. If you look at an Erica Parkinson video you will see something different.
Parkinson likes to dribble opponents. A lot.
She is quicker, faster, and has better ball control than most of the players she’s playing against in the Portugueuse league, and she uses that to her advantage.
In the 2025-2026 season she averaged 3.6 succesful dribbles per game at a nearly 80% success rate. For reference, Ashley Sanchez so far in 2026 is averaging less than half as many dribbles, at only a 31% success rate. This also leads to Parkinson being fouled a lot. She’s been fouled over 2½ times per game, a rate that would be top 10 in the NWSL this year.
Do I expect her to be this successful taking on defenders in the NWSL? No, especially because some of her quickness advantages will evaporate.
But this level of close control bodes well for her ability to receive under pressure and turn with the ball. You can see some echoes of Manaka in the way that Parkinson looks to receive, immediately turn, accelerate past defenders, and then find a target.
She can use her ball skills and body control to wall off larger defenders to get a shot as well.
She has a wide range of passing, and likes to play risky forward passes. She’s not quite as adept at passing as she is at attacking on the dribble. Overall, she completed 77% of her passes and 40% of her long balls, but only 18% of her crosses.
Here you can see her put a defender on the ground, perform a 1-2 in space… and then hit the througball at not quite the right angle.
She does show good instincts, including patience to wait for the right opportunity as shown in this assist.
Defensively, you see a mirror of her offense. According to Sofascore, she has been dribbled past over two times per game, and has committed over two fouls per game. (She’s not a Bianca St-Georges-esque hatchet woman; she only has two yellow and no red cards). She won less than ¼ of her aerial duels, although at only 5'3" she wouldn’t be expected to be an aerial dynamo. Her primary defensive impact is being quick and recovering loose balls (over 8 recoveries per game). With the step up in competition, I would temper expectations about defense.
What to expect #
On the bright side, the step up in the quality competition also comes with a step up in the quality of her teammates. What’s notable from watching some of the full videos of her at Valadares is just how often she would pick the ball up, dribble a couple of defenders, and bang a speculative longball… because there were no better nearby options to combine with. As she’d be trying to slice through midfield, her teammates aren’t moving at the same speed she is. Give her better teammates and a better system, and her passing combinations will likely improve, and she won’t have to dribble two opponents before finding her next play.
Parkinson herself discussed the step up when playing internationally.
Everything’s much quicker, much faster. You have less time on the ball, but it’s also really good technically, so it’s really good to up your game and just be aware of everyone.
Much like Jackson did in 2024, I’d expect Parkinson to start with smaller cameo experiences. This can introduce her to the speed and physicality of the NWSL game, and let her develop chemistry with her teammates.
Her signing fits the strategy espoused by chief soccer officer Dr. Ceri Bowley. Even if the Courage aren’t hunting for big signings like the Sam Kerrs and Catarina Macarios of the world, they can still bring in exciting young international talent that’s on the rise.
